Bill Marsh

Independent International Mediator

Bill has been a full-time international commercial mediator for the last 30 years, and he has been recognised as one of Europe’s most experienced commercial mediators. His practice includes all kinds of commercial disputes, including those focused on IP, art law, entertainment and commercial law. He is a founding member of Independent Mediators (one of Europe’s leading private mediation chambers), and was a founding director of Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) in London. He has taught mediation around the world, including being a visiting professor at Hong Kong Shu Yan University, and by appointment to the UN. He is the author of Commercial Dispute Resolution: An ADR Practice Guide, and a sought-after speaker at international mediation events.

Formerly a commercial lawyer, Bill has focused exclusively on mediation since 1990. He has served as Mediator in a wide range of art law and commercial disputes, both domestic and international, and involving parties from some 50 countries. Bill has served as Mediation Adviser to numerous governments (eg. Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey), chaired mediation forums hosting over 30 governments, and represented UK government at the United Nations (UNCITRAL) negotiations.
Art-related disputes have involved issues such as provenance, authenticity, insurance and IP. Bill was appointed to the Mediation pool of CAfA in January 2020.

Bill has been top-ranked as a mediator in every independent directory, every year, and twice appointed Who’s Who Legal “Global Mediator of the Year”. He is a UN and OSCE mediator, and in addition to his commercial practice has mediated extensively in religious and ethnic conflicts, including on direct appointment by the Archbishop of Canterbury, from who he received an award for outstanding services to reconciliation. He is a Distinguished Fellow of International Academy of Mediators, and a member of Panel Mediator for Singapore International Mediation Centre, CEDR Accredited mediator, ICC Mediator, International Panel Mediator CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution, International Mediation Institute Certified Mediator, member of the Law Society of England and Wales, and a regular faculty and judge at the ICC mediation moot.

He holds an Honours Degree in Law from University of Durham (1984), a solicitor’s professional qualification and a range of mediator qualifications.
